The first FOCUS Friday of the year was a success! This day was to get students acquainted with what would be going on throughout the 7 FOCUS Fridays during the school year. They also got to know and tell a little bit more about their interest, and what they might want to get involved in as they start to enter high school. Here are some of the main things we FOCUSED and will continue to key on throughout the year.
- Graduation year: Students learned what year they would be promoted from 8th grade to high school and what year they graduated college.
- ACT Explore Test- the students took a mock ACT test at the beginning of the day to let them experience what an ACT test would look like in high school
- Interest Inventory: Students got to figure out what category interested them the most and the jobs that could possible come along with it. Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, Conventional, Realistic.
- Scholars Program: Students learned what each of them had to do during their time at HAJ in order to be in the scholars program. There is one star, two star, and three star. This consist of attendance, what clubs or sports they participate in, GPA, hours of community service, and a lot of the activities that will be done during FOCUS Friday. Depending on how much the student is involved and and accomplishes will determine which level of the scholar program he or she will be in.
- Application: Students learned how to fill out the basic information on a sample application. They realized that they needed to know and have memorized their address, their parents hone numbers as well as their own, their school of enrollment, what year he or she graduated from junior high and college, and the last four digits of their social security number. While this might not be everything that would be on a college or job application, all of this basic information will be on their and it vital to know.
Throughout these FOCUS Friday's, the students and advisors will be using this information to better get an understanding of what interests the students. the knowledge of these skills can and will be very beneficial for future endeavors.
