  • The Fable of George Washington and the Cherry Tree
    From The Life of
Washington, by Mason Locke Weems, 1809*

It is always appropriate to stop and learn about and reflect on our nation's great executive leaders. Here is a wonderful tale about a young George Washington and his relationship with his father. Hint: there is a cherry tree and an ax involved.

    William Shakespeare

    Does the Hokey-Pokey

The following is from the Washington Post Style Invitational contest that asked readers to submit "instructions" for something (anything), but written in the style of a famous person. The winning entry was The Hokey Pokey (as written by William Shakespeare).

O proud left foot, that ventures quick within
Then soon upon a backward journey lithe.
Anon, once more the gesture, then begin:
    Command sinistral pedestal to writhe.
Commence thou then the fervid Hokey-Poke,
A mad gyration, hips in wanton swirl.
To spin! A wilde release from Heavens yoke.
Blessed dervish! Surely canst go, girl.
The Hoke, the poke -- banish now thy doubt
Verily, I say, 'tis what it's all about.

        -- by "William Shakespeare"

Written by Jeff Brechlin, Potomac Falls, Maryland, and submitted by Katherine St. John.

The Old North Church in Boston, Massachusetts... On the evening of April 18, 1775, Mr. Billings's ancestor, Robert Newman, a friend of Paul Revere's, hung two lanterns in the belfry arch of The Old North Church, announcing to Revere and other alarm riders of the British army's intent to head inland by sea.

Concord, Massachusetts - This town was founded in 1635 and is considered the first town established inland (away from the sea or a river connected to the sea) in all of America. Nathaniel Billings (ancestor of Mr. Billings) was one of the founding fathers of the town of Concord. He arrived in Massachusetts in the spring of 1635.
